My hometown got some really sad news earlier today; Jim Kovacik— better known as “Coach K”— passed away at the age of 93. Coach K not only raised three children in Massapequa, but he spent the majority of his life assisting our sports teams, opening up the high school each morning and monitoring the hallways, all while brightening everyone’s days with his cheerful demeanor and insightful advice.
During my senior year, I had the privilege of interviewing him for a little broadcasting assignment. The segment is short, but I really think it shows how understanding and down-to-earth he truly was.
RIP Coach K. The halls of Massapequa are missing a hero today
